Hardwood Flooring vs. Carpet: Which is Healthier?

We would like to thank Sean’s Health Tips for their help on this post.

Contrary to the popular belief that hardwood is healthier flooring than carpets, there are certain arguments regarding to the said issue.

It is known that certain allergens, such as pollen, mites, dusts, can easily be trapped in the carpet. Surprisingly, carpet manufacturers accept and support this belief.

On a study conducted by the Carpet-health.org, they compared the airborne particles found in the carpeted rooms to the particles found in non-carpeted rooms. The conclusion said that since the particles are trapped in the surface of the carpets, walking over the carpeted floor may cause disturbance on little number of the particles. The result also showed that there is less dust in the air inside the room over carpeted floors.

On the other hand, hard flooring manufacturers stressed that the allergens are still present, even though they are trapped. In their prospective, it is better to see and be able to remove the dust than to let them be trapped all over the house. Even persons other than hardwood industries share this notion. As to Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, they prefer hardwood floors as an ideal flooring for persons with allergies and asthma.

But to generalize the argument, it doesn’t matter if you use hardwood or carpet as your flooring, for a healthier option. What is important is that a homeowner who likes carpet must be religious enough to be aware of the proper maintenance and cleaning to keep it safe, healthy and attractive.
